Where should I sleep?

February 8th 2008 23:31
So where should your bub sleep? There are a number of options at night including in your bed with you, a cot in your room or even in a cot in the nursery.

Cosleeping or having a Family Bed is where your bub sleeps with you in your own bed. Typically this is achieved by using something similar to a Tetra which elevates your bub above your level on the bed. Cosleeping seems to be the more natural option and helps to promote breastfeeding, bonding and getting your baby more acclimatised to the day/night sleep pattern.

However, SIDS advises that there is a slightly increased risk of your baby suffering Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. People on high doses of medication that make them drowsy are specifically recomended not to partake in Cosleeping because of dangers associated with not being fully aware of your environment. Of course some people also drive on such medication.....*gulp*

Of course, if you can't cosleep because of medication or you are just plain worried about the inadvertant consequences of rolling onto your bub by accident then he/she can sleep in a cot or bassinet. Either in your own room or in a nursery. Western societies seem to have developed a tradition of "Preparing the Nursery" for when bubs comes home from the hospital. I should point out here that having your baby in the nursery doesn't necessarily indicate that the baby is being neglected or that a parent is following controlled crying. A baby can be in a nursery and still be well attended too and looked after.

But which is best? And why?
Does your baby sleep with you in your bed? And what benifits does that give you and bub?

Or does he/she sleep in their cot in your room?
Or have you completely seperated yourselves into seperate rooms?
