TV : The Midnless Child Minder
February 17th 2008 19:34
I was listening to two very proud parents the other day as they proclaimed "Our son loves the TV. He really finds the moving pictures interesting and we always sit him down to watch it, in fact we need to turn it off when he's feeding otherwise he's too distracted".
Siad child was about 5 months old.
Babies love brightly coloured objects including pictures and I'm not surprised that the addition of motion might make them even more interested.
But what about interaction? The TV requires none with the baby only required to sit and watch. Sure, it keeps them occupied while you do the vaccuuming or whatever household chores that need to be done. But what about the times when you're with them and have the opportunity to engage them in interaction?
I can't help feeling sad that some parents, even when they have the chance to interact, simply turn the telly on and plonk the child on their lap.
What happened to playing with your baby?
We sit on the floor, give him tummy time. Encourage our bub with the skills he is developing (just about crawling at 14 weeks) and we practically talk non stop to him. He's such a lively and interactive bubd very sociable too.
{B]Do bubs raised on TV end up being less sociable than those who are not? Can TV be damaging to the kind of person your child grows up to be?[/B]
