The Magical 18 Months

So what happens at 18 months?
I've heard Dad's talk of the magical time when their bubs are 18 months old. Of improved interaction, better communication and a lack of nappy changes. Yet.... I rarely hear a Mum say that their bubs are so much more fun once they're that age.
As our bub quickly approaches 4 months I can't say that I can speak from experience in terms of the 18 month phenomena but I also can't help feeling that Dads have been missing out on some time. Or simply that they aren't taking the time to really learn their bubs and the way they communicate at an early age.
At 3 months old our bub is so captivated by us on an individual basis. Watching him give a full body smile (arms, legs and face) is so rewarding and fun to watch. Sure, communicating isn't the same as talking to a 18 month old but its still there. Albeit on a much subtler note and once you get the hang of these attempts at communication it is so fascinating and wonderful.
Is it just that Dads expect their kids to come out of the womb and play football the next day? Read books straight off? Sit down and watch the cricket?
