Selections and Choice
March 1st 2008 06:25
Modern technology has brought with it many great advances and benifits. Unfortunately some of those also raise ethical issues about whether or not we as humans, actually should have the right to override the natural order of things.
Sex Selection seems to be an increasingly available option during pregnancy these days that technology has given us access to. Particularly those seeking IVF.
I'm sure everyone in China thinks this might be wonderful where they are only allowed to have on child. Apparently having a son is infinitely preferable because the boys can earn a living and help the family. I can certainly understand that preference given how much the Chinese are usually paid (next to nothing).
But this still leaves the question...
"Should we be able to choose?"
Part of me wants to say "No" outright but there are some medical reasons for choice (parents with disabilities that are genetic might be concerned about passing them on to a boy who has greater chance of showing the gene).
Should we be allowed to choose the sex of our children?
