Selection and Choice part 2
March 2nd 2008 02:07
Yesterday I was talking about selection and choice and whether we, as humans, should have access to those choices. This was more specifically about Sex Selection through IVF. But there is also another type of selection and choice offered to the pregnant woman that has been opened by modern technology.
I am of course referring to the ethical can of worms that is opened up when people start talking about genetic screening.
Genetic screening is open to anyone who's pregnant and has concerns about what might or might not be popping out in 9 months. Such screening is meant to be reassuring and provide Mum and Dad to be with information and let them know of possibilities that might occur during the pregnancy process.
But there's a darker side....
It often places some parents in the hot seat about whether or not they feel they could cope with a child that might, and I stress the word might, have. I'm sure some parents are also frightened due the very public victories of children suing their parents successfully for bringing them into the world
Should we have access to such information? And if yes then what does that give us the power to do?
