Safety Pin
February 19th 2008 06:54
Seems like the safety pin is a tool of the past when it comes to nappy changing. I only just saw a few at KMart the other day and no cloth nappies in sight.
I suspect that safety might have something to do with that, but what about safety of another kind during the ever continuing onslaught of nappy changes?
I've heard and read many a story that contains bits about Mum's and Dads having bubs on changing tables, they turn around to grab something, turn back and bub is halfway off the table or heading towards the floor....
It surprises me no end how many parents seem to think they can leave bubs unattended on changing tables. My partner and I were in one of the booths for breastfeeding the other day and Westfields and heard the following conversation (my partner did anyway) between Mum and bub.....
Mum : Oh you're the cutest little baby I've ever seen aren't you. Yes yes you are.
(sound of velcro tabs undoing on a disposable nappy)
Mum : Have you done a poo for Mummy? No? Oh well can you do a poo for Mummy? No? Well you make sure you do a poo for Mummy tonight ok and I'm going to change this anyway.
(Sound of nappy being changed and I think some of our stiffled giggles
Hey well it was cute)
Mum : Now you stay right there and don't move for Mummy
(There was dead silence as Mummy walked about 7 metres to the sink, washed her hands and walked back whilst leaving the baby on the changing area which is very slippery at Westfields in Bondi Junction).
Do parents really think that prelingual babies can understand and are safe enough to leave like that? I can't count how many times we've been told "Ahave one hand on your baby" and "Even if they've never done it before they can flip, roll or otherwise jeopardise their safety in some manner at any time".
Am I just being paranoid? Or do some parents truly take too much risk when they could be avoiding it?

So no, you're not paranoid. You're just a careful and loving parent
