Old School

February 29th 2008 04:50
Many many centuries ago the cavemen taught their children at home, err I mean at the cave.

Somewhere along the line we decided to place children in schools where they were provided with discipline, education and interaction with their peers (sometimes not so nice).

Discipline of course takes a different form these days though I've been subject to the use of a cane (and I'm only 30 this year).

As many parents become more concerned about what is learnt at school and perhaps some of the bad memories of being at school, many are taking matters into their own hands and turning to home schooling.

So what does Home Schooling have to offer?

From waht I can see it offers a much better personally tailored learning environment and structure that should enhance the childs learning capacity and abilities. The chance to have one on one tuition provides a much better environment for learning as the child is always the centre of focus and has the attention of the adult every step of the way.

But is school just about learning?

Many advocates back the structure and discipline that a school can provide. It also offers the ability to distinguish between "school" time and "home" time. It also provides a structure that is endorsed by learning experts who are probably far more knowledgeable than the average Mum or Dad.

Most importantly though, school seems to offer a social interaction for children and an opportunity for them to mix with other children of their age in a variety of environments. Of course some of us probably have bad memories of those......

Would you home school your kids and for how long?

Do you feel you would be up to it in terms of the amount of time required and the knowledge required?

Would you be able to provide an unbiased learning environment? And what about providing social activities?
